Karen Atherley
Specialising in ceramics at Camberwell Collage of Art she was tutored by renowned potters such as Colin Pearson and Janice Tchalenko.
A trip to the Greek islands in her second year cemented her love of vivid Mediterranean colours combined with influences of Greek antiquity and more latterly the French Impressionists particularly Matisse.
Karen’s signature decorative style of rubenesque female figures has been developed over 30 years applied to an ever changing range of ceramic shapes which provide an ideal ‘canvas’ on which to paint.
She is presently hand building most of her pots using a range of techniques including press moulds, coiling and slabbing.
Each pot is decorated with coloured slip fired to earthenware temperatures before being dipped in a transparent glaze before being fired again with a final flourish of ceramic decals.
